Encouraging breast cancer survivors to get moving
Vicky Hallett, Washington Post, Thursday, September 23, 2010
Last October, Tracey McKee’s experience with Breast Cancer Awareness Month was personal: She learned she had Stage 3 of the disease. After undergoing a modified radical mastectomy, the 39-year-old was quickly cancer-free. But she was left with a tightness around her chest that felt like she was wearing a shrunken sports bra, arms that refused to lift above her head and general exhaustion.
Summary:
Laura Pennino interviews Alberto Perlman, CEO and co-founder of Zumba® Fitness, a dance-fitness program that combines Latin music and dance moves, and resistance training, into a regiment of interval aerobic training. The “Zumba® Fitness-Party” is an amazing story of branding development that includes instructor certification, a clothing product line, and even a partnership with The Kellogg Co. and Special K breakfast cereal.

Try This Trend? What to Know About the Zumba Workout.
“Just two years ago, less than one million people tried the Zumba workout. Today: Seven times that—in 60,000 locations in 105 countries.
It’s no wonder. The Zumba workout program, which combines Latin dance moves with resistance training, provides an intense workout no matter your fitness level (and no, you don’t have to be a seasoned salsa dancer to pick up the steps). It also burns anywhere from 400 to 500 calories per 45-minute session—or more, depending on how intensely you move. Thanks to the upbeat music and “party” exercise atmosphere, Zumba also has the reputation for being one of the hottest (and most fun) cardio workouts out there right now. So we had to ask: Does the Zumba workout live up to the hype?”
“It’s hard not to be intrigued by Zumba–the popular Latin dance-inspired fitness craze that more than seven-and-half million people have tried worldwide. The name alone is interesting and, lately, it seems like everyone is talking about it.”
